Al Fahidi Fort

History of Al Fahidi Fort

Located in the heart of the Dubai city, Al Fahidi Fort is one of the most important historical monuments in Dubai. Built in the year 1799, this magnificent Fort is believed to be the oldest architectural masterpiece in Dubai. Al Fahidi Fort was built with an aim to defend Dubai in case of attacks from the sea. Major expansion work was carried in 1830s 1850s under the rule of Late Sheikh Maktoum Bin Buti.

Dubai Museum

The Fort was converted into a renowned museum famously known as 'Dubai Museum' in the year 1970. The Museum is one of the greatest attractions for tourists visiting Dubai. It displays a rich collection of objects showcasing the cultural richness of the region in the past.

You can witness almost everything of fascinating Arab ranging from Arabian sailing boats to old weapons and pearl-diving outfits to an impressive range of military artifacts. The museum houses colourful life size dioramas, sets of pearl, merchants eights and scales and many more, provide a deep insight into the old Arabian lifestyle. The most impressing and amazing exhibit at the Museum is a 3,000- 4,000 years old complete grave from the Al-Qusais archaeological site.

Lifestyle of Dubai

A treasure house of artifacts which displays metallic items, stone items, pottery ware, stone inscriptions and skeletons discovered in the archaeological ruins of Dubai - mainly from Hatta, Al Soffoh, Al Qusais and Al Jumeriah. Interesting facts and information about general lifestyle of Dubai, trade and commerce and rich bridal ware and jewelery can be gained by visiting the Al Fahidi Fort. Since Pearl Diving was prevalent in earlier Dubai, a collection of weights, sieves and scales used by pearl merchants is also on display.

Visitor Hours of Al Fahidi fort

The rehabilitation work of Al Fahidi fort was taken by Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president, prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The Al Fahidi Museum is open for visitors from Saturday to Thursday between 8.30 am to 7.30 pm and on Fridays 2 pm to 7.30 pm.
